Nextcloud: Self-Hosted File Sync That Keeps Your Data Off Someone Else's Server

Open source alternative to Dropbox and Google Drive. Host it yourself, own your files, cut the recurring SaaS bill.

nextcloud/server

Nextcloud is a file storage and sync tool you install on your own server instead of renting space from Dropbox or Google. You get the same things: upload files from your laptop, sync them across devices, share links with others. The difference is your data lives where you control it. For solopreneurs and small teams, that means no monthly per-seat fees, no vendor lock-in, and no guessing what happens to your files. It's mature enough that integrations exist for calendar, contacts, and team collaboration. The tradeoff: you handle the server maintenance yourself, or pay a hosting provider to do it. If you're already self-hosting infrastructure or running your own VPS, it's a straightforward drop-in. If you're not, the upfront friction might not be worth it.

Just realized I've been paying for cloud storage when I could've self-hosted it. Nextcloud does what Dropbox does, except your data stays on your server and you control the whole stack. 69k stars on GitHub. The ecosystem is massive—sync, sharing, calendar, contacts, all in one place. Most of it runs on standard infrastructure, which means no vendor lock-in and no monthly surprise bills. If you're building something that needs file sync as a feature, or you just want your files back, this is the thing to integrate or deploy.
